Tassels, Trivia & Triumph: Graduation Party Game Fun!

Six years ago, I started working on a Master’s degree. I was fresh out of school, working full-time and full of ambition. Since then, I’ve changed roles multiple times, bought a house, got married and had a beautiful baby girl. There were several points along the way that I considered giving up completely. It probably would have been a bit more relaxing if I had! But I didn’t, and now, nearing the end of my maternity leave, I’ve managed to finish all of my classes. I’ll be graduating this fall, so my sister was kind enough to surprise us with an early graduation party.

The Decorations: The Tassel Was Worth The Hassle!

My sister used decorations she picked up from the dollar store to make a gleaming table. The champagne glasses were plastic, which was much appreciated, as my fifteen-month-old is very mobile and very into drinking from cups.

The Menu: One Smart Cookie

As always, my sister had a small plate of charcuterie out when we arrived (appetizers are a host’s best friend!). She also had set out the giant “M” for Master’s cookie she prepared for dessert. Gotta love a giant cookie!

For a graduation dinner, go with a meal you know your grad will enjoy. My sister said I liked “sandwiches with lots of different elements”, which is very true. I enjoyed these chicken sandwiches immensely!

The Trivia: Elimination Station

We did elimination-style “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” trivia questions. This is a really easy game to prep for, as there are a ton of great options for questions online.

How To Play:

  • One by one, each person gets a question to answer. If they answer correctly, they stay in the game. If they answer incorrectly, they are eliminated.
  • 30 seconds to answer each question.
  • One lifeline to phone a friend, stopping the timer or giving two minutes to call a single friend.

Here are a few of the questions that got people out:

Science (5th grade):
Q: What is the chemical symbol for gold?
A: Au

 English (4th grade):
Q: What is the subject of this sentence: The dog chased the ball?
A: The dog

Geography (4th grade):
Q: Mount Everest is located on the border of which two countries?
A: Nepal and China (Tibet)

English (3rd grade):
Q: Which word is an adjective in this sentence: The tall tree swayed in the wind?
A: Tall

Because the questions are supposed to be easy, there was definitely more fear of getting a question wrong. We also went one by one, making it a lot less chaotic. Overall, this was the perfect game to add to a graduation party!

Gifts for Your Grad: Class Dismissed

A cute keepsake is a great option, like this certificate of completion my sister made for us:

Would you like to hear any tips I have on how to balance being a full-time mom and part-time student?
